Chandan Kumar Behera is a Senior Project Associate at SMSS Lab, IIT Kanpur. Prior to this he worked at Intelligent Systems lab, IITK as a Senior Project Associate. 

He completed his Masters in Design (Intelligent Systems Design) at IIT Kanpur. His research interest involves Biomedical signal processing, Intelligent Systems Design, Non-invasive techniques for disease identification, Machine learning, Cognitive & Social Neuroscience, Sleep studies, Non-pharmacological interventions for Affective Disorders (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), study of plasticity of brain in the context of social behaviour.

His current research work involves analyses of Biomedical signals like EEG for emotion quantification. He has worked on machine learning tools in understanding Sleep Disorder by analysing multimodal biomedical signals like EEG, EMG, ECG etc. He developed an intelligent system for the automatic detection of Sleep Arousals, using Artificial Neural Network (ANN) based programs, working with the sleep practitioners of AIIMS, India for the manual scoring. He also worked on developing a novel therapeutic technique for the sleep insomnia using the covariates from Cognitive & Behavioural Therapy. The ANN-based intelligent system can be used by the medical practitioners to detect the sleep disorders easily in a few minutes and accurately, without the normal painstaking effort of manual scoring for 5-6 hours per recording. He worked in conjunction with the collaborators of IITK in medical domain (Dr. Arpita Priyadarshini, SCB Medical college, India) and psychologists of IITK in developing the therapeutic technique for sleep disorder, at the Sleep Lab, IITK. The method was tested with various statistical techniques like t-test, F-test to project the results to the entire IITK population. In his undergraduate, he has worked on exploring the Brain Computer Interface and controlling a robotic hand by processing the brain signals.

He has worked on Automatic Control and Measurement of Light Intensity, in a workshop conducted by Massachusetts Institute Of Technology (MIT) and further improvised it with practical applications on AC circuits, as an academic course project of IITK, thereafter. The project uses an electronic circuit and a MATLAB based program to automatically control the intensities of the artificial lights as per the user’s requirement, which has practical applications in power savings in the industries and aesthetics in living rooms. He made a low price electronics circuit for Brainwave Detection, with the Electronics Club at IIT Kanpur, which was displayed in the annual technical festival of IIT Kanpur, TECHKRITI. He has also worked on creating a land phone based remote control system as one of the course projects.
